Magical things happen in our classroom all the time from special elf visitors to brain sprinkles that help the kids focus on a test. I love that we can still get excited about the little things and have class discussions about the wonders in the world. It is also amazing to see the amount of growth students make. The kiddos come in with the basics and leave ready to take on the world.

At this age, students are starting to develop their own unique personalities (and quirks!) and theyโ€™re growing in their independence as learners. I love getting to know more about their interests and to see them get excited about what they get to learn! Iโ€™ve been teaching 4th grade for 8 years in January, and Iโ€™ve seen a lot of curriculum in that time, but what makes things fresh for me each year is getting to see a new batch of students having brand new experiences for the very first time! This is especially true when those experiences are new to me too, like with our new reading curriculum. Weโ€™ve already read stories from where my family is from and from Greek mythology- two of my favorite topics to learn about and to teach! Students get so excited when they get to learn more about me and it opens the door for me to learn a lot more about them, too!

I always swore I would never teach children taller than I am, but have now realized I have to invest in high heels because I just love this age group! Where do I begin?! First, I love their humor and the fact that they get (or at least laugh) at mine. They have such great perspectives on learning and have wonderful, different ways of solving problems, both in math and other areas of the curriculum. They keep me updated on the "cool stuff" I need to know with my own kids. I love the thoughtful conversations we have, and are able to really explore different ideas, theories and outlooks on life.

Between other teachers, the students, their parents-- these relationships make teaching so much easier! My students are also always teaching me new information. I don't talk at them when I'm teaching; we have incredible discussions throughout the day. I teach them curriculum, life skills, jokes, and they teach me what they know! I love it.

Teaching kindergarten is a magical thing. The kids really make every day an adventure. I love the curiosity they bring into our classroom everyday. Their love of learning guides them to discover new things and provides us with rich discussions throughout our days. Though our school days may seem loud and busy, the growth the kids make throughout the school year is pretty remarkable and is proof that there is method behind the madness.

What I enjoy most about teaching is the interactions I have with students. Whether it is a teaching moment or just getting to know them better, I really love seeing how students think about and understand the world around them. My favorite subject to teach is science for this exact reason. I enjoy watching kids have fun and learn while they make meaning of interesting phenomena and new material.

They are still so excited to learn and start to gain the confidence and independence right in front of my eyes. I'm also convinced that 3rd grade is where the sense of humor is developed--these kids make me laugh! Watching students transition from being in the "younger grades" to being among the "big kids" is very special, and I love being able to help get them there.
